The Arizona Department of Transportation reports that westbound Interstate 10 will close this weekend between 51st and 67th avenues to allow construction crews to continue work on the Interstate 10 (Papago Freeway) interchange with the South Mountain Freeway. Drivers should consider alternate routes to avoid heavy traffic and delays approaching the work zone.

Westbound I-10 will be closed from 10:00 p.m. Friday, July 19, to 5:00 a.m. Monday, July 22, in west Phoenix.

In addition to the freeway closure, westbound on-ramps at 35th and 43rd avenues will be closed. Drivers should also be aware that the westbound exit ramp at 43rd avenue is closed for unrelated work.

While I-10 westbound traffic can exit at 51st Avenue and use the access road to re-enter I-10 at 67th Avenue, to avoid heavy traffic and delays approaching the work zone drivers should consider alternate routes including Loop 101 west and south from Interstate 17 or exiting at 35th Avenue or earlier and taking local streets to re-enter I-10 beyond the work zone.

Westbound I-10 drivers traveling beyond the Phoenix area should consider taking Interstate 8 west at Casa Grande and State Route 85 north from Gila Bend to re-enter I-10 in Buckeye.

The 22-mile South Mountain Freeway is scheduled for full completion in 2020, although traffic is expected to begin using the freeway earlier. It will provide a long-planned direct link between the East Valley and West Valley and a much-needed alternative to I-10 through downtown Phoenix. Approved by Maricopa County voters in 1985 and again in 2004 as part of a comprehensive regional transportation plan, the South Mountain Freeway will complete the Loop 202 and Loop 101 freeway system in the Valley.
