The Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) wants to keep your spirits merry and bright by limiting traffic delays due to highway construction and by offering a few holiday travel tips.

It’s anticipated that a record 122.4 million Americans will travel at least 50 miles from home during the holidays. This forecast is a 2.2% increase over 2024, breaking the previous record of 119.7 million travelers.ย

To provide maximum travel capacity and minimal construction delays throughout the holiday season, MDOT crews and contractors will halt all non-emergent lane closures from Wednesday, December 24 through Thursday, January 1.

โ€œEven though highway construction across the state will be suspended, motorists should be aware that some lane closures will remain in place,โ€ said MDOT Executive Director Brad White. โ€œThese lane closures are to protect the traveling public, and MDOT wants motorists to treat these like active work zones, even with the absence of workers. Please slow down in these work zones.โ€

No matter how far you roam, safety should be your top priority. MDOT offers these tips for safe driving this holiday season:

  • Plan ahead and allow for extra travel time.
  • Slow down and use extra caution in work zones.
  • Donโ€™t litter those new presents! Secure your load properly to your vehicle.
  • Buckle up! Using your seatbelt is an easy and effective way to save lives and reduce serious injuries in the event of a crash.
  • Do NOT drive impaired. If you plan to drink, have a designated driver.
  • Avoid distractions like cell phones and food.
  • Watch for deer and other wildlife. When temperatures drop, animals are more active near highways. Use extra caution if traveling during dawn, dusk and after dark.
