The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) is continuing a $38.2 million project to rebuild the rest areas and improve safety on I-10 in Cactus City. The project includes upgrades, relocating EV charging stations, new hot mixed asphalt paving, more parking spaces, landscape improvements, and ADA curb ramps.
Work continues on I-10 between Indio and Chiriaco Summit. The Cactus City rest areas will stay closed until spring 2027.
Current work includes grading, placing cement block walls for the eastbound and westbound buildings, building facilities, electrical work, installing light poles, paving parking lots, and adding landscaping.
Occasional lane closures may occur near the rest areas during work hours. Construction signs are in place. Drive carefully. Work vehicles and crews may enter and leave the shoulder.
Rest areas are estimated to be closed until Spring of 2027.
