I was hauling down I-10 around lunch and decided I couldn’t look at another fast-food wrapper, so I pulled off in Tonopah to hit up the Black Bear Diner. It’s right there by the TA, which makes it a breeze to park the rig and stretch the legs. The place has that classic mountain cabin vibe with all the wood carvings and bear decor, and honestly, it’s a nice change of scenery from the white lines and asphalt I’ve been staring at all day. It was pretty crowded when I walked in, but that’s usually a good sign that the food is worth the wait.
I ended up ordering the Bigfoot Chicken Fried Steak, and man, they aren’t kidding about the size of the portions here. The plate was basically overflowing with gravy, eggs, and potatoes. It’s exactly the kind of “stick-to-your-ribs” meal you need when you’ve got a long haul ahead of you. The food tasted fresh and hit the spot way better than any drive-thru ever could. I also have to give a shout-out to the coffee; it was hot, strong, and the waitress kept my cup full without me having to flag her down.
The service was friendly, even though the staff was clearly running ragged with the lunch rush. You can tell they’re used to dealing with us truckers because they get you in and out relatively quick without making you feel rushed. Since it’s right next to the truck stop, I was able to fuel up the truck and myself in one go. If you’re passing through this stretch of Arizona and your stomach is growling, do yourself a favor and pull over. You’ll leave full, happy, and ready to tackle the rest of the desert.
